The Aim? Making the Sûre one of the cleanest rivers in the Greater Region by reducing the amount of micro-pollutants (pharmaceuticals, personal care products etc.) but also Ammonia and Phosphate, that make their way into the Haute-Sûre catchment, the main source of drinking water for Luxembourg and a popular bathing site. How will this be done? By combining Nature Based Solutions (NBSs) such as constructed Wetlands and soil-filters (containing bio-chars) with modelling of rivers and sewage systems and then using Real Time Control (RTC) techniques, we can largely prevent sewage directly overflowing into surface waters during rain events and come up with an action plan detailing where and when to build additional NBSs.

Nature Based Solutions are an effective way of eliminating many micro-pollutants and they also seem(!) effective at reducing the copy-number of Antibiotic Resistance Genes (ARGs). They do not require a lot of maintenance and they can be (beautifully!) integrated in the landscape. However, they are large, require land and cannot just be built everywhere. This is where RTC4Water comes in, because our software can preferentially direct wastewater during heavy rain to these structures and can therefore avoid overflows where there are no NBSs. So we started yesterday: The SIDEN as lead partner (Lux), the CEBEDEAU, IDELUX Eau and the SPGE from Belgium, the RPTU (Uni. Kaiserslautern) from Germany, the University of Luxembourg, RTC4Water and the LIST from Luxembourg and then, of course, a number of associated partners with an interest in the results: The AGE, SEBES, the ALUSEAU, natur@ëmwelt, Parc Naturel de la Haute-Sûre, SIVOM de l'Alzette (FR), HYDREOS, Parc naturel Haute-Sûre Forêt d'Anlier, DWA Landesverband Hessen /Rheinland-Pfalz /Saarland and Luxinnovation. All-and-all we are hugely excited by the prospect, and it is going to be an interesting three years!
